365 Empty Squares

365 Empty Squares

So, how did I manage to turn my life around from burned out, overwhelmed mom, to calm, centred happy Claudette?

With 365 empty squares.

I know it sounds crazy, let me explain.

I was stuck, feeling totally fed-up and miserable with the way I spent my days. I knew that something needed to change, radically if I was to ever find myself again.

It started with a small promise to myself, that I intended to keep for once!
I committed to a challenge – something that made me feel uncomfortable – and I was determined to see it through to the end.

The inspiration was sparked by Robin Antar’s quote:

“Life is an empty square unless one fills it up with matter.”

I decided to create a collage a day – every single day for 365 days. No matter what happened that day, or where I was in the world.

My rules were simple:

  • ONE – I could only work on the piece in one sitting. Once I had finished, I could not go back and change anything at all.
  • TWO – I was not allowed to start over again – ever.
  • THREE – I would share the square on Instagram every single day – whether I liked it or not, whether I thought it was ‘good’ or not.

Sure, some days were ugly, boring and frustrating – and self-doubt crept in.  But some days were easy and felt I was proud to share what I’d created.

And as the days went on, I learned to push through fear, procrastination and perfectionism.

I found my creative voice and l rediscovered the joy of play.

And I want that for you too!
